There will be no Public Affairs events during July and August. The Council's new program year begins in September. We will continue to post materials online, however, so please visit our website from time to time.

Speakers will include
Andrew Bacevich on American militarism; Graham Allison on nuclear terrorism; Alvaro Vargas Llosa on Latin America; and many more of this caliber. Enjoy the summer!

WHAT'S NEW

David SpeedieDAVID SPEEDIE JOINS THE COUNCIL

The Council is pleased to announce that David Speedie, formerly of Carnegie Corporation, has joined the Council as a Senior Fellow. He will work on program and institutional development.

Among his achievements at Carnegie Corporation, David fostered several major initiatives on U.S. relations with Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. He also helped usher in new Corporation programs on nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction and on other international peace and security issues. In 2003, David began developing a new initiative on Islam, laying the foundation for the Corporation's newly established Islam Initiative.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

  • CHILDREN AND ARMED CONFLICT: SRI LANKA, A CASE IN POINT

Robert Hormats compares the fiscal policies made in previous American wars to those of the current administration and argues that today's decisions place America's future at risk.

The Hindu right poses a threat to India's secular democracy, says Martha Nussbaum, and this example of the impact of religious nationalism is relevant to democracies everywhere.
